Preparation
Check the firmware version
Follow these steps to check the currently installed firmware version of the media receiver:
- Turn the media receiver ON.
- Select Settings from the Home screen.
- Select System.
- Select System Information.
The current firmware version will be displayed.
Note: If the version displayed is 2.00.01, you do not need to update the firmware.
Important notice
- Park your car in a safe place and start the engine to prevent the battery voltage from becoming too low during the update process.
- Do not turn off the media receiver while it is updating.
- Do not disconnect your smartphone or the USB storage device during the update process.
- Set the date and time after the update is complete.
Download & Install
There are two ways to update the firmware:
- Update via the Internet using USB tethering with your smartphone (recommended)
- Update via a USB storage device and your computer
You can update the receiver by connecting it to your smartphone using a USB cable. The process usually takes about 15–30 minutes.
Notes:
- There is no guarantee that this update method can work with all smartphones.
- If the currently installed firmware version of the receiver is 1.03.12 or older, the USB tethering update method is only available using Android phones.
- If you cannot update the firmware via USB tethering, please try the methods described in the Troubleshooting: Update via the Internet using USB tethering section under Questions & Answers.
- If you still cannot update the firmware, please update via a USB storage device.
Set up the equipment (Important)
Note: Before changing connections, turn the car ignition off and disconnect the power supply leads (yellow and red) to avoid a short circuit. After changing connections, connect the power supply leads only after all other leads have been connected. For more details, please refer to the Connection/Installation section of the product manual.
- If the currently installed firmware version of the media receiver is 1.03.12 or older, a popping noise may be heard in some receivers during the update if the external power amplifier(s) is (are) connected to the FRONT AUDIO OUT, REAR AUDIO OUT, and SUB OUT ports via RCA cables. Before starting the update, we recommend performing one of the following actions to prevent damage to the receiver:
- Remove or disconnect the fuse from the amplifier(s) power source.
- Disconnect the remote turn-on wire from the amplifier(s). Be sure to protect the end from touching anything until it is reconnected.
- If you're unable to perform either of these actions, contact a local Sony authorized retailer to assist with the update process.
- Regardless of the currently installed firmware version of the receiver, we recommend connecting the camera power cords (leads) to the accessory power terminal to enhance the stability of the camera performance.
Step 1: Set the date and time
- Turn the media receiver ON.
- If the date and clock are not set, select Settings from the Home screen.
- Select System.
- Select Date/Time and set the date and clock time.
IMPORTANT: Ensure the current time is properly set on the clock. If it's not, the network communication may fail.
Step 2: Install the update
- Select Settings from the Home screen.
Note: If Settings is not displayed in the Favorite section, tap All Apps to display the HOME2 screen, then select Settings. - Select System.
- Select Software Update.
- Select Update via USB Tethering.
- Connect your smartphone to the USB port of the media receiver using a USB cable.
- Enable your smartphone's USB tethering feature.
- Ensure that your smartphone is connected to the Internet.
- To enable USB tethering, refer to your smartphone's instruction manual.
- Select Next.
- If the receiver finds the available firmware update, the version will be shown as 2.00.01.
- Select Next.
- Check the disclaimer and End User License Agreement (EULA) shown on the screen before the download. If you agree to install the firmware, press Agree.
- Check the notes before starting the download.
- Press Update to start the download.
- The receiver will then begin updating. The update will take approximately 15–30 minutes to complete.
Step 3: Confirm that the update was successful
- Turn the media receiver ON.
- Select Settings from the Home screen.
- Select System.
- Select System Information.
- The current firmware version will then be displayed.
- When 2.00.01 is displayed as the version number, this means that the firmware update is complete.
Step 4: Set the date and time
- Turn the media receiver ON.
- Wait until the GPS is displayed.
- Select Settings from the Home screen.
- Select System.
- Select Date/Time and set the date and clock time.
You can update the firmware by downloading the update to your USB device and installing it on the digital media receiver.
How to download the update
- Connect a USB storage device to your computer. The device should have the following specifications:
- FAT16, FAT32, or exFAT formatting.
- Enough available space to store the update file.
- Ensure that your computer is connected to the Internet.
- Download the update file (XAV-9500ES_2000100.eup) to your computer.
- Copy the file to the root directory of the USB storage device that is connected to your computer.
- Disconnect the USB storage device from your computer.

- Select Update via Flash Drive.
- If the message Update file is not found is displayed on the screen, check the file structure of the USB storage device. The update file may be missing, may not be saved to the root directory, or you may be using an old version or a corrupt update file.
- If the receiver finds the available update from a USB storage device, the version is shown as 2.00.01.
- If the version displayed is not 2.00.01, you may not be using the correct update file.
- Select Update.
- The receiver will then begin updating.
- The update will take approximately 5 minutes to complete.
Step 2: Confirm that the update was successful
- Turn the media receiver ON.
- Select Settings from the Home screen.
- Select System.
- Select System Information.
- The current firmware version will then be displayed.
- When 2.00.01 is displayed as the version number, this means that the firmware update is complete.
- If you are unable to update the firmware, please try again using a different USB storage device.
Step 3: Set the date and time
- Turn the media receiver ON.
- Wait until the GPS is displayed.
- Select Settings from the Home screen.
- Select System.
- Select Date/Time and set the date and clock time.
Questions & Answers
Note: There is no guarantee that this update method can work with all smartphones. If the currently installed firmware version of the receiver is 1.03.12 or older, the USB tethering update method is only available using Android phones. If you try the methods described but still cannot update the firmware, please update via a USB storage device.
- The message Network communication failed is displayed:
- Retry the update in a place with a good signal condition.
- If the data and time are not set, set the correct time in the Date/Time settings.
- Disabling the Wi-Fi connection on the smartphone might resolve this.
- The message USB Tethering is not available is displayed:
- Check that your smartphone is connected to the USB port and that USB tethering is enabled in the network setting.
- To enable USB tethering, refer to your smartphone's instruction manual.
- The message Current software is up to date is displayed:
- The update is already completed, and your receiver is using the latest firmware. No additional update is needed.
- When you connect your smartphone to a USB port, CarPlay or Android Auto automatically starts and the smartphone cannot switch to USB tethering:
- Disconnect your smartphone from the receiver, then select Settings → System → Software Update → Update via USB Tethering.
- Reconnect your smartphone when the message USB tethering is required for software download. is shown.
- The firmware download has stopped and there is no change in the download progress for a long time:
- This may indicate a problem with the network connection.
- Cancel the download using the Cancel button and check the network access of your smartphone, then retry the update.
- The message Update file is not found is displayed:
- Check that the update file XAV-9500ES_2000100.eup is properly saved in the root directory of the USB storage device.
- If it is saved, erase the existing file from the USB storage device, or use a different USB storage device, and then retry the entire download and update from the beginning.
- The message Update failed is displayed during the update:
- The USB storage device may be defective, or the update file may be corrupted.
- Press Restart to restart the receiver and return to the previous system version.
- Erase the existing files from the USB storage device, or use a different USB storage device, and then retry the entire download and update from the beginning.
